  • Todd Beal, Associate Superintendent Personnel/Pupil Services, Rim of the World Unified School District

The district has completed its first snack and school supply drive of the year. School supplies include items such as paper, folders, pencils, highlighters, pens and more. Non-perishable and canned food items are also included. The focus of the event is help students whose families may not have the means to provide such supplies. Child Welfare and Attendance Specialist Deborah Messina, Mountain Homeless Coalition and the Girl Scouts did an amazing job organizing and filling up the boxes for each school site. Parent volunteers have graciously delivered the boxes to the school sites.

In efforts to increase the safety of our students and staff, the District recently entered into an agreement with Hesperia Unified School District for Sheltering and Mass Care Facilities to establish shelter locations for our district. In the event of an evacuation during school hours facilities will be available as shelters for students and staff. We want to thank Hesperia Unified along with Risk Management staff who worked together to establish this option for our district.

LAE received a special gift from our PTA--freshening up the main entrance to our school! Our front windows received a security film displaying our school colors and mascot! This prevents visibility to inside our campus but allows visibility out. Additionally, volunteers of PTA refreshed our painted paw prints throughout every hallway floor, as well as repainted our main front hallway walls with a new mountain graphic motif. LAE is truly appreciative of the volunteers who helped to further beautify and secure our facility.

Rim Teachers came together on August 9th to learn about strategies they can use to support their students learning. A Professional Development survey was sent out in the Spring of the 2018-19 school year to get suggestions for topics of interest. The top 3 were the focus of the workshops on August 9th. Teachers participated in three one-hour sessions to learn more about: Google Classroom, Social-Emotional Learning, and Student Engagement and Participation Strategies. We are excited about increasing student learning and supporting professional development.

  • Derek Swem, Director, Special Services

One of our top priorities for our Special Education Staff – certificated and classified alike, is to acquire top-level training and professional development for all.  Teachers and paraprofessionals will have opportunities throughout the school year to acquire such training.  This week, Director of Special Services Derek Swem earned a certificate in Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) through East Valley SELPA.  Through the training, he learned different methods for valuable data collecting and resources to assist special education teachers in their classrooms.  Next week, three staff members continue their training to be Professional Crisis Management (PCMA) trainers for our school district.  We feel that it is the utmost importance in acquiring updated knowledge of methods and practices to help our students.

MPH welcomed our 6th-grade students for the 2019-2020 school year with a 6th-grade welcome assembly hosted by our 6th-grade teachers. Students received information regarding all things MPH and 6th grade, followed by a tour of the campus. At the conclusion of the first week of school 6th-grade students shared the following quotes:

“I was really scared but then when I came it was fine. I saw my friends. I love changing classes. I love meeting new friends.” - M. Groff“

I love the classes and all of the work and the sense of community and family up here! I love Mrs. Marinaro so much and I can really connect with here because I am often the kind of outsider person because I am shy. Mrs. Marinaro really encourages me and helps me be my best! Thank you, Mrs. Marinaro!” – A. Murphy

“So far at MPH, I love it here. The staff is so friendly and so are the students. I heard that there were major bullying problems but that is not true at all. Everything and everyone is so positive. I love seeing everyone I know and all of the new people. I have no idea where the kids from last year got the rumors but they are not true.” – L. Schroeder

  • Michelle Murphy, Superintendent, Rim of the World Unified School District

During the 2018–2019 school year, the DonorsChoose.org community of donors (individual citizens, philanthropic, and corporate) donated $11,570 towards new classroom resources for Rim of the World Unified School District. This supported 15 teachers across the district.

As a 501(c)3 nonprofit, DonorsChoose.org is free for districts and schools to use and ships materials, not cash, to classrooms. We provide administrators like you with full transparency and oversight into what’s been donated.

David Nygren, Principal, Rim of the World High School

We started our year with our Freshmen Link Crew Assembly on Monday before the first day of school with over 200 freshmen showing up to meet with their junior and senior Link Crew leaders to do some team building activities in small groups.  This was a great event which allows freshmen more familiar with the school, get their schedules, develop some class pride, and to become familiar with some students and staff who can help them on campus!

Next Tuesday we will begin classes with San Bernardino Valley College teaching college courses here at the high school.  We are very excited about this partnership and have many students signed up to take courses on the mountain either with teachers in person or distance learning.
