• Rim of the World High School Physical Education

The purpose of the Physical Education Program at Rim of the World High School is to provide a well-rounded program of activities that will aid in the development and maintenance of physical fitness, individual skills, physical and mental health.  This is accomplished by offering a variety of physical experiences including individual, dual, and team sport exercise.  Each of the activities is aimed at the overall development for the young person, now and in the future, through sports and activities with carryover potential for lifetime fitness.

Each semester is divided into two sessions called a quarter.  Students will participate in one or two activities each quarter.  The activities will cover the California State Standards for physical education.  For high school students, the three overarching content standards are as follows:

Standard 1:       Students demonstrate knowledge of and competency in motor skills, movement patterns, and strategies needed to perform a variety of physical activities.

Standard 2:       Students achieve a level of physical fitness for health and performance while demonstrating knowledge of fitness concepts, principles, and strategies.

Standard 3:       Students demonstrate knowledge of psychological and sociological concepts, principles, and strategies that apply to the learning and performance of physical activity.

All students in physical education at Rim of the World Senior High School will take the test.  This test will take place near the end of the year.  9th grade students that pass this test are only required to take one additional year of physical education to meet graduation requirements.

    Grading Policy:

Physical Education grades are based on the following criteria:

50-60 percent on dress and participation.

40-50 percent on skills testing, written tests, and PFR (physical fitness runs)

Students fail to earn participation points when they are absent or not actively participating in the daily activity, 2 points for each infraction.  Absences must be made up by the student within the same amount of time the student was absent.  (Example:  3 days absence = 3 days to make it up.  1 day absent = 1 day to make it up).  To make up an excused absence, the student will (on his/her own time) write a 5 paragraph essay on an article related to health, diet/nutrition, fitness, exercise or sports. Then submit it to his/her teacher within the time frame allowed.

    Dress Code:

P.E. students are to be dressed in the following:

    1. The Rim High School P.E. uniform or blue, gray, or white tee shirt and shorts suitable for physical activity.
    2. In addition to the required uniform, students may wear plain white, blue, or gray sweatpants and/or sweatshirts.
    3. Tennis shoes, jogging shoes, etc. (No street shoes, boots, flip flops, sandals, loose jewelry, slip-ons, or bare feet).

50-60% of the student's grade is based on positive daily participation.

    Non-Dress Policy:

A student who reports for roll call without proper dress will not be eligible to participate.  Failure to dress out for P.E. will result in disciplinary action

Students will be issued locks and lockers.  Once issued, it is the responsibility of each student to secure his/her lock and locker on a daily basis.  Unsecured items are prone to theft.   Staff will not be responsible for lost or stolen items. Note:  a $9 replacement fee will be charged for lost/damaged locks.  All electronic devices and valuables should be secured in locked lockers during class.
