Board member Cindy Gardner had the wonderful opportunity of representing Rim of the World Unified School District in Washington D.C. Mrs. Gardner was one of the chosen delegates from California to represent California School Boards Association. Mrs. Gardner met with staff members for the House Committee for Education and Workforce, Senator Kamala Harris, and Congressman Pete Aguilar. She lobbied that our local officials in Washington not cut educational funding in the Federal budget.
She also had the opportunity to sit with Congressman Glenn Thompson, who sits on the House Committee of Education and Workforce. During their 30-minute conversation, she spoke to him about special education and how the District’s contribution to meet the needs of our special education students has increased to almost $3.5 million for 2018-2019, or $50,000 per student, including transportation costs. Mrs. Gardner urged him to address and pass the Reauthorization of the IDEA Act and fund special education at the 40% threshold. She further shared the success of the District’s Career Technical Education (CTE) courses and paths, urging him to reauthorize the Carol Perkins CTE Act and maintaining Title II funding.
This was a successful trip to Washington that Mrs. Gardner paid for herself. She was able to speak up for Rim of the World Unified School District to seek funding opportunities at the federal level.
