Message form ROWUSD regarding today's snow day

Good afternoon,

For the safety of the students, staff, and community the snow day was called due to an unexpected increase in snowfall, which had a larger impact at the higher elevations. Our goal is to always make the decision to close school by 5:30 am; sooner if possible. Staff began driving the roads in our community at 3:30 am. Between 5 and 5:30 am, it was determined that with chains, busses could travel. Shortly after, snow began to fall in many areas of the mountain. During the early morning, we did plan on having school. Reports were made that snow was accumulating at higher elevations and road conditions worsened. Reports started coming to the administration that staff was either stuck on some roads or having difficulty driving. Since Rim High had a late start day, the district had the flexibility to make a late call and cancel school. These decisions are not made lightly and the safety of our students, staff, and community are our utmost concern. The decision was made to call a snow day as we communicated with staff and site administration. Transportation began to drive to all bus stops to ensure students who did not get the call would be picked up and taken to school or parents called by transportation. This was an unusually late call and the district understands the confusion it may have caused. The District follows our snow day policy posted on the website,

Currently, there are 6 days built in our calendar for snow and they have all been used. In fact, ROWUSD has used 9 days as of March 21, 2019. Staff and students will need to be at school in March and May. Our district calendar on our website has been updated for March and May to reflect the removal of all built-in snow days. We are not canceling Spring Break (April 1-5) or the Memorial Day Monday Holiday (May 27). We are now having student and staff days on the days scheduled for an extension of these breaks or holiday. To be very clear, there will be school on March 27-29 and May 23, 24 and 28. For the additional day or any more snow days, the district will be applying for a waiver from the state of California. Please also visit our district calendar ( ) for the most updated district information.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
