Weekly Spotlight - CHE

Marlynn Humphries, Principal, Valley of Enchantment Elementary School

Schools in the Rim of the World Unified School District begin celebrating Kindness Week on January 27, along with many other schools across the nation and world. Several organizations promote a kindness theme and schools may choose which to follow. The commonality of all is the recognition that people are less kind than in the past, that children are not necessarily taught this and other values in the home. Schools then assist with character education, which is certainly as important as preparing for college and career, for students who lack basic moral values become parents who don't teach another generation. We encourage families to participate with their students, regardless of the ages, in being specifically aware of choosing kind actions and noticing the effect it has on the doer and the receiver. Many students will have a checkoff list with items such as smile at 25 people today. (This one is very easy in a classroom!) Other challenges are to sincerely compliment someone, write a note or social media post about a kindness you received, refrain from a harsh reply, and sing a happy song to someone who is unhappy. Last year, CHE was awarded the Kindness seal for our third year of participation. We will again participate for the week and follow it up with our three week Read Across America challenge using a Kindness theme this year. We believe that four weeks of concentrating on kindness will help us make kindness a habit!
